Michael Arthur Mullavey, 77, of Dunstable, MA and Naples, FL, passed away on Monday, August 26, 2024, at Lowell General Hospital. Born in Portsmouth, NH, Michael was the son of Gordon and Charlotte Mullavey.
He graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Dover, NH, in the Class of 1964 and went on to earn a B.A. in Business Administration from the University of New Hampshire.
Michael married Jill Sullivan on December 3, 1977 and together they shared a life full of love and happiness. He retired as Head Golf Professional of Mt. Pleasant Golf Club after a remarkable tenure of over 40 years and recently celebrated his 50th year as a member of the PGA of America. Through golf, Michael touched the lives of many and always relished the opportunity to meet new people and give back to the community, such as his yearly clinics for the students from the Perkins School for the Blind.
Apart from golf, Michael adored horse-racing as a co-owner of JMJ Stables and made nearly yearly pilgrimages to Saratoga. When at the craps table, Michael suggests you always press it and don’t forget to bet the hard ways (your results may vary). A life-long fisherman, Michael also enjoyed gardening in his spare time in Dunstable. In his retirement, he worked at the International Golf Club in Bolton, MA and at Tiburon Golf Club in Naples, FL.
In addition to his wife Jill, Michael is survived by his son, Michael Mullavey Jr., and his wife Veronica Guerra of Coral Gables, FL; his daughter, Jaclyn Addorio, and her husband John Addorio of Naples, FL; his brothers, Kevin Mullavey of Rye, NH, and Jeffrey Mullavey and his wife Paula of Kiawah Island, SC; and three grandchildren, Roman Addorio, Charlotte Addorio, and Michael Mullavey III. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews and countless friends. Michael was predeceased by his brother, Gordon Mullavey.
Michael’s warm presence and knack for storytelling will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in Michael’s name may be made to the Mount Pleasant Scholarship Fund.

My heart is broken for the entire Mullavey family. Mike was the person that you meet that you cannot wait to see again. He was a man that cared and LISTENED, which is rare these days. We talked about his family, golf and just life in general. I will miss this amazing human being at the International Golf Club. Fairways and greens my friend. Thank you for being my friend.

So sorry to hear of the passing of my dear friend Mike’ Mullavey. My sincerest and profound condolences to Jill and family for their loss. I joined MPGC in 1967 and a few years later we welcomed Mike as our Head Golf Professional. It didn’t take long for Mike to establish himself to all of our members and staff as not only the “Head Pro”, but as a caring and the nicest person you could have as a friend. Mike will truly be missed by all that knew him.
God bless Mike and may he now rest in peace.

On behalf of the Vaughan family I would like to express my sincere sorrow for Mike’s passing to Jill, Jaclyn and Mike and all of your family members. My father Tim treasured his days in the pro shop working and laughing alongside Mike, they had a truly special friendship. Mike was a true benefactor of the blind children at Perkins School for the Blind, welcoming them each summer at MP for golf, cheeseburgers, and yes even golf cart driving lessons. He embodied what we say at Perkins, there is possibility in everything. His face lit up as we walked down the steps into the club, kids yelling out his name, it was a very special time for our school. Thank you Mike for all of that, and thank you for being one of my dad’s besties for so long, and thank you for talking Lorraine off the edge when she would call looking for him and you gently nudged him out the door for a rather crooked walk down Rockingham! I’m sure the two of you are laughing right now remembering the good ole days, forever on the 19th hole up there! Much love and gratitude, Lori Vaughan McCall and the Vaughan family.

Deepest condolences to the Mullavey family on this sad day. My wife and I regarded Mike as one of the kindest, most generous, and thoughtful people we were lucky to have known. So many people were lucky to have had him in some way in their lives.

Jill,Jaclyn and Mike,
You have lost a loving husband, a terrific Dad and a proud Grandfather.
He was a mentor to me for over 50 years. From his first day as an assistant at Mt Pleasant until his last day as Head Pro.
He always gave more than he asked for. His work ethic was second to none. His love of the game and the membership of Mt Pleasant was on display everyday. Mike was my mentor but more importantly he was my friend. I will miss him dearly but I hope that he is in a place free of pain and a smile on his face. Let the healing begin and anytime I think of Mike it will bring a smile to my face. RIP my friend. John Moriarty

Mullavey Family, please accept my condolences on the loss of Mike. I remember asking him one time how I could get my young kids interested in golf. He looked at me and said (I can still hear his voice) “Gilly, take them out on the course. If they want to throw rocks in the pond, let them throw rocks. If they want to chase frogs, let them chase frogs. They’ll figure out if they want to play or not.” Great advice that I now pass along to another generation. Mike’s larger than life presence will be missed at Mt. Pleasant. RIP Pro.

Saddened to hear the news of Mike’s passing. My first job was working for Mike in the pro shop. Thanks to Mike many life-lessons were learned. Last October I visited Mt. Pleasant for the first time in 50 years and was able to reconnect with Mike. What resonates with me is Mike’s generosity and decency.

A decade ago when we became members of Mount Pleasant Golf Club, Mike could not have been more welcoming. He introduced us to so many people and helped us sign up for just about everything offered….including the Thursday Twi League . He was highly respected by all……One story that stands out ,and there were many, was when George asked Mike for tips on how to blast out of a sand trap…when we arrived at the club , we saw them both in the practice trap swinging away…..his lessons worked… George went on to win the Member Member that year……Mike will be missed by all…He was a great guy and a perfect gentleman….Best to all Family Members…

Monday I received a call while driving that the gentleman who helped me fall in love with the game of golf had passed. Jr and Jaclyn your dad was a very special person in my life. Whether it was seeing what a sponge I was about wanting to learn everything I could or maybe it’s because I was there from morning to night. He gave me my first job, cleaning and organizing the bag room and helping out in the pro shop. After the last cart was away he’d let me punch the board for a shot at a sleeve of golf balls. He would always come down and watch John Dowd and myself hitting balls down off the first tee well before any practice areas. It’s during these times when your dad teach about the grip, stance, ball position etc. He would stay with us until the shag bag was empty after just working a 10-12 hrs. He taught me how love practice and how to respect the game.
My favorite memory with your dad came when he finally asked myself, Dowdy, and G. Walsh to play in a Pro Jr (the three of us had been whispering to each other for weeks to ask him, but we were all to chicken, he must of caught wind or overheard us) because a week before the tourney he asked us and we couldn’t believe it. It was the only time I ever played 18 with him and all I did for 18 holes is stare at his swing. He had one of the smoothest golf swings I ever seen, I loved watching it. After playing pretty well your dad took us to The Hilltop Steakhouse where he made us all order our first fillet mignon. Three 12 yr olds enjoying the day with our Pro.
On behalf of my family and my Dad Al (who your dad couldn’t teach to play lol) we send our love and support to the entire Mullavey family during this time. God Bless
Ps….In the 25 plus yrs he was my pro I NEVER knew how much pro shop credit I had…..”Hey Mike, do I have credit for this shirt?” Yup! grab it..”Mike I need a sleeve of balls…not sure where I’m at with credit?” You’re all set……LOL Amazing

Dear Jill, Jaclyn and Mike,
On behalf of the Scanlan family I want to convey our heartfelt condolences to you on the passing of Mike.
I got to know Mike when he was an assistant pro at Kernwood and the “Salem guys” really had a lot of good times playing golf and socializing with Mike. He was always a joy to be around and always had a wry smile on his face.
Though I did not see Mike often I always treasured the times that we were together- He was a dedicated pro and loved his association with Mt Pleasant
Mike was a pros pro- the perfect gentleman
I will never forget him and I am so thankful he was a part of my life
So sorry for your loss

The definition of “CLASS”.
Great to play with especially at Middleton during a Senior event.
We would commiserate w/each other about the state of our games(nothing to do with age).
A great golf pro but more importantly a great person.
You will be missed.

Mike was a smart, funny, good man. He loved people, enjoyed interacting and learning about their lives. He could regale you with stories of club members, friends, family members. He was never judgmental or mean but just amazed at the nature of human behavior. Our joys, sorrows, foibles and all that make us human. Mike’s famous truism “You just can’t make this stuff up” made us step back and laugh at ourselves. To the family you have lost a great husband and father and Mount Pleasant has lost a good friend. Our Prayers are with you during this very sad time. Barry and Pat Egan
