Donald “Deacon” Mungovan of Lowell, MA

5581 MungovanDonald “Deacon” T. Mungovan, 92, of Lowell, MA died Saturday July 18, 2015 at Lowell General Hospital.

He was married to the late Barbara A. Mungovan, who died in February of 1982.

Born in Lowell, he was the son of the late John and Eileen “Irene” Mungovan.

He proudly served with the U.S. Navy on board the USS LST 721 in the South Pacific during World War II. He participated in the initial landings at Panay, P.I., Negros, P.I. and Balikpapan, Borneo. He attained the rank of Radioman Third Class and earned the World War II Victory Medal, the American Area Ribbon, the Asiatic Pacific Area Ribbon (1 Star) and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon (1 Star). He also served aboard the USS LST 558 and the USS LSM 45.

Deacon retired from the W.R. Grace and Company of Acton in 1985.

He was an avid Red Sox fan and a lifelong resident of Lowell.

Deacon enjoyed playing the lottery,occasional trips to Foxwoods and Las Vegas, socializing with friends and watching western movies.

He is survived by his son, David and his wife, Maryanne Mungovan of Dunstable; two daughters, Sharon Galluzzo of Phoenix, AZ and Donna McMahon of Lowell; a sister, Joan Lake of Hudson, MA; three grandchildren, Gina Armienti, Brad Armienti and Kaitlyn Mungovan; two great grandchildren, Cooper Torrez and Mia Torrez and many nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late John Mungovan, Paul Mungovan, Muriel Dailey and Catherine Leary.

Visiting hours Tuesday 3 to 7 P.M. Funeral Wednesday at 8:00 a.m. from the DOLAN FUNERAL HOME 106 MIDDLESEX ST. CHELMSFORD, with a funeral Mass at 9:00 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church.
