Dennis Phillip Sweeney, 72, of Chelmsford, passed away peacefully on October 8, 2024, at Lowell General Hospital after complications from a stroke on September 27th. Throughout his hospital stay, he was surrounded by the love and support of his sons, partner, siblings, and
former spouse.
Dennis was born in Modesto, California, on March 25, 1952, to Martha Parker Sweeney (Morgan), a nurse, and Glenn Francis Sweeney, a pilot during World War 2. As a teenager, he moved to Boston with his mother and six siblings, later graduating from Hyde Park High School. After acquiring many certifications, he had a long career in the tech industry, producing computer chips at Raytheon, Intel, and others.
Affectionately known as “Dingo,” Dennis will be remembered for his intelligence, quick wit, and kind nature. He had a joke or saying for every situation, providing ease and insight to those around him. One of his favorite sayings was, “Mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it
doesn’t matter,” which perfectly encapsulated his grace and humor.
Dennis was an avid reader who enjoyed watching movies and spending time with his partner, Susanne, as well as their two cats, Chumley and Goldie. He had a deep respect for nature, especially animals. This respect was exemplified in an act of kindness when he rescued a dog
being neglected by its owner. His sons recall another where he stopped the car to help a goose with something caught around its neck.
Dennis is survived by his two sons, Ryan (Megan) Sweeney and Scott (Martyna) Sweeney; his partner, Susanne Johnson; his siblings, Timothy Sweeney, Trish Sweeney, Peter Sweeney, and Mary Zaino; and his former spouse, Deborah Sweeney (Almquist), with whom he shared two sons.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Michael (Joan) Sweeney and Daniel Sweeney.
Though he will be deeply missed, Dennis’s legacy of kindness, humor, and wisdom has left an indelible mark on his family and friends and will live on in their memories.
