Francis (Frank) Edward Flynn, 87, of Chelmsford, Massachusetts and father of five died on March 29, 2024 surrounded by his family after a short illness.
Frank is survived by his wife of nearly 25 years Maureen Altongy, his five children and stepson, their spouses and seven grandchildren. Before marrying Mrs. Altongy, Frank was married to Cornelia Chilstedt of Quincy, MA for 34 years. They resided on Arbutus Avenue in Chelmsford for 30 years and raised their family there before Cornelia’s death in 1999. As parishioners of St. Mary’s Church in Chelmsford, the couple taught catechism classes to dozens of children over the years. Their home was known for being filled with laughter, generosity and creativity, and it was a beloved second home for the friends of their children.
He is survived by his eldest son Brendan Flynn, his wife Kimberly Flynn and their children Audrey and Caulin who reside in Lowell, MA; Christopher Flynn and his wife Lori Flynn of Houston, TX; his daughter Elizabeth Wolff and her husband Nicolas Wolff of New York, NY; David Flynn, his wife Heather Flynn and their three sons Samuel, Ian and Benjamin who live in Seattle, WA; Diane Sylvester and her partner Damaso Reyes of Barcelona, Spain, and his stepson Brian Altongy, his wife Lori Altongy and their children Nicole and Joseph of Bolton, MA.
Frank was born in Somerville, MA in 1937, the only child of Francis Denis Flynn of Maplewood, MA and Margaret Mary Collins who emigrated from Tipperary, Ireland. After graduating from Malden Catholic High School in 1954, he entered the U.S. Air Force in 1956, serving in Morocco as Airman First Class, where he launched a jazz radio show that deepened a lifelong love of the genre. After serving for four years, he went on to graduate from Boston College with a business degree and to have a distinguished 35 year career with Honeywell, opening plants in Arizona and Puerto Rico. Frank was admired for his acerbic humor and his innumerable stories about his childhood in Somerville, his travels and accomplishments later in his life.
FUNERAL NOTICE
Visiting hours Wednesday, April 3, 2024 from 4-6PM at DOLAN FUNERAL HOME, 106 MIDDLESEX STREET, N. CHELMSFORD, MA, followed by a service at 6PM in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers the family request donations can be made to The Jimmy Fund (http://danafarber.jimmyfund.org/goto/FrancisFlynn) in honor of Francis Flynn.

Dear Flynn & Altongy families,
Please accept our sincere condolences on the loss of your loved one. Let you sorrow in this moment be lessened by the knowledge that he is now experiencing total peace and happiness. He left you on Good Friday but spent Easter with Jesus. He was a great and lifelong friend. It is truly a privilege to be able to say that.
