Hazel C. Burke of Chelmsford, Mass passed away peacefully on June 1st, 2022 with her daughter Priscilla and her son Vernon by her side. She was born in Boston, Mass on April 26th, 1926 and was the daughter of the late James and Hazel Balcom. She graduated from Waltham High School with the class of 1946 and later worked as a telephone operator and then a librarian. During WWII she was on the coast watch along the Charles River protecting the armory in Watertown. She met her beloved husband, Douglas on a blind date and after marrying they lived and worked for a few years on a dairy farm in Nova Scotia before moving back to the US and settling in Burlington, Mass where they raised their six children.
Hazel was a natural caregiver with a kind heart who always had her door open to anyone in need. She enjoyed reading, gardening, knitting and cooking for family, friends and the church. Her brown bread and baked beans were legendary and she was a whiz when it came to word games. Church life was very important to her and she was an active member of the church, logging many volunteer hours in every community she ever lived in from Florida to New Hampshire.
Hazel most certainly made a positive difference in every life she touched and her presence will be greatly missed. She was predeceased by her husband Douglas and her two sons Kenneth and Gregory as well as her sister Virginia White. She is survived by four of her children: Priscilla Black of Lowell, Mass, Judy Barry and husband Gregory of Nova Scotia, Vernon Burke and his wife Kelly of California and Brian Burke and his wife Jocelyn of Florida. She dearly loved and was proud of all fourteen of her grandchildren: Philip, Torey, Meghan, Adam, Elizabeth, Joshua, Becky, Brian, Kenneth, Weston, Amy, Graham, Nathaniel and Genevieve and all seven of her great grandchildren; Augustus, Atticus, Theodore, Caden, Deacon, Rowan and Henry.
There will be no visiting hours. The funeral will take place on Friday June 10th at 11:00am at the United Church of Danbury, NH 03230. Burial will be in Riverdale Cemetery in Danbury. Arrangements by Dolan Funeral Home 978-251-4041.

My deepest condolence to the Burke family. I had the pleasure of meeting Hazel on her many trips to Nova Scotia and found her to be a warm and charming lady. I have known her daughter Judy for many years and I believe that Judy’s care and empathy for others is a direct result of her Mother.
