John Francis Welch III, 95, of North Chelmsford MA, died Thursday, February 2, 2023, in Lowell MA, surrounded by his family. He was the loving husband of Mary (Tobin) Welch with whom he celebrated 66 years of marriage this past October.
Born in Lowell, he was the son of the late John and Bernice (Constantineau) Welch. He graduated from Keith Academy with the Class of 1945 and attended Northeastern University. He proudly served in the US Marine Corps during World War II and the Korean War, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was an active communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church and member of the American Legion Post 313 and Metrowest Detachment 1037.
John worked as a Civil Engineer for the Massachusetts Dept of Public Works and was an enthusiastic storyteller of local area history. He was an avid gardener, accomplished craftsman, and friend to animals, which he passionately shared and imparted to others.
John was predeceased by his brother, Rev. Joseph Welch and his sister, Mary B. Welch. Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons and their wives, John and Celeste Welch of MA, Martin and Marian Welch of FL; three daughters and their husbands, Patricia and Edward Durkin of MA, Anne and Steven Morais of NH, and Mary and Francis Queen of NH; nine grandchildren and their spouses, John and Kara Welch, Kenneth Welch, Deanna and Timothy Grupp, Colin Welch, Owen Welch, Michael and Madalina Morais, Matthew Morais, Erin Queen, and Brendan Queen; and two great grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE
Funeral Monday at 8A.M. from the DOLAN FUNERAL HOME, 106 MIDDLESEX ST., N. CHELMSFORD with a Mass at 9A.M. at St. John the Evangelist Church, 115 Middlesex St., N. Chelmsford, MA. Burial at St. Patrick Cemetery, Lowell, MA. In Lieu of flowers, donations in Memory of John may be made to the charity of your choice.
