Margaret..fondly known as Peggy…M. (Rogers) Purtell, 94, of Lowell, MA passed away Tuesday, March 5, 2024 after a brief stay at D’Youville Senior Care Center in Lowell.
She was married to the late Charles Purtell who passed away in 1998.They had been married for 47 years.
Born in Lowell, MA, she was the daughter of the late Timothy Rogers and Mary Ellen (Scalley) Rogers both of whom immigrated from Ireland in the early 1900s.
Margaret attended Sacred Heart grammar school and graduated as a class officer from Keith Hall High School, Lowell, with the class of 1947.
She retired in 2007 from Bither Insurance Agency of Tewksbury at the age of 77 along with her sister, Kathryn, who was 80 years old.
Margaret was a communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church, N. Chelmsford, MA and formerly a communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Lowell. Her Catholic faith was very important to her.
In addition to her strong faith, Margaret was a very kind, family oriented and charitable person. Not only did she donate regularly to numerous charities but was so very generous to her children and grandchildren. She loved to cook Sunday dinners for her family and loved her Irish heritage. In her retirement years she spent almost every day going on daily excursions and luncheons…driving many miles…with her sister and her best friend, Mary. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren – especially loving all the family gatherings at her children’s homes.
She is survived by her sons Charles Purtell, Jr. and his fiancé Debbie Shanahan of Tyngsboro, MA, Stephen Purtell and his wife Susan of Lowell, MA, Robert Purtell and his wife Bonnie of Lowell, MA, Edward Purtell and his companion Kelly Bournival of Pelham, NH; her daughters Sheila O’Brien and her husband Robert of Milford, NH and Sharon Crowley and her husband Timothy of Dracut, MA; her sister-in-law Patricia Rogers of Harwich, MA; her special niece Maureen Gillette Spinney of Lowell, MA; eleven grandchildren – Timothy Purtell and Kenneth Purtell; Stephen Purtell and Sean Purtell; Michael Purtell; Robert O’Brien, Celia O’Brien and Meghan (O’Brien) Caruana; Danielle (Purtell) Rawley; Thomas Crowley and Patrick Crowley. In addition, she leaves seven great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
She was the sister of the late Thomas Rogers, John Rogers, and Kathryn Gillette.

Visiting hours Friday, March 8, 2024 from 5-8PM. Funeral Saturday, March 9, 2024 at 8AM from the DOLAN FUNERAL HOME, 106 MIDDLESEX ST., CHELMSFORD, with a funeral Mass at 9AM at St. John the Evangelist Church. Burial in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Lowell, MA. Memorials may be made in her name to St. John the Evangelist, attn: St. Vincent de Paul Society, 115 Middlesex Street, N. Chelmsford, MA 01863.
