Marie Louise Smerigan (Hanson), 80 years old, of Westford, died peacefully on March 5, 2024.
Born in Malden, MA on December 9, 1943, she was the daughter of the late Dana Hanson and Oline (Staal).
Marie enjoyed so many things and excelled at anything she was involved in, there are too many to list. Always a New England sports team fan, it would be rare for her to miss any games whether on TV or in attendance. She loved talking about politics. Traveling would be her third love, travelling anywhere from Aruba to Italy. New England beaches were fine too, always going with friends and family. Gardening and sewing kept her very busy. She was an excellent seamstress. She tried all sorts of crafts. She was on a Billerica, MA dart league. She even went fishing. Being a hockey/baseball mom and Cub Scout den other for her son, and participating in the 4H organization with her daughter was one of her proudest accomplishments. She saw the inherent worth of every person and her never ending generosity will be missed.
She attended Lowell Technical Institute in the legal secretary program and worked for Larkin & Larkin Law after completing the program. From there she was by her husbandโs side assisting with his business. She ended her career of over 25 years, retiring from Raytheon, working at many locations as an executive secretary supporting many engineers over that span. She would just light up if she could talk about her time there. She was very proud of the company.
Most of all, she loved her family. She is survived by her three children, John M. Smerigan Jr. and his long-time girlfriend Cisco J. Carr of Hudson, NH, Sherryl M. Smerigan of Sycamore, IL, and Wendi and Phillip Abely of Westford, MA; one brother Karl Hanson of Chester, ME and one sister Donna Shaw of Lowell, MA. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews; and many, many close friends.
Marie was predeceased by her former husband John M. Smerigan, sister Oline Tessier, brother Dana Hanson, sister Valerie Joyce.
The family would like to thank all the medical assistance Marie received throughout the years. She came across a lot of caring people.
