Marilyn Joan Leadley Nicodemus, 73, of Chelmsford, MA had breast cancer and fought bravely to the end of her life. She passed away peacefully and with grace surrounded by her family and friends on Thursday, December 3, 2015. She was born on September 12, 1942 in Halifax and grew up on a farm in Lanark outside of Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada. She was raised by Mike and Mary Gillis. After receiving her nursing training at St. Martha’s School of Nursing, she moved to Lowell, MA where she made her life, married, and raised her family. She was a wonderfully caring person, whether in her chosen profession where she served as an OR technologist at Saints Memorial Medical Center (formerly St. John’s Hospital) for 45 years or in making so many friends and family feel loved. Marilyn was an avid Red Sox fan. Throughout her life, she enjoyed gathering with family and friends on Sundays for meals, to watch games or just sit on the porch. For many years, she has participated in the Lowell General Hospital TeamWalk for CancerCare. For her 70th birthday, she celebrated by being serenaded by her favorite singer, Elvis.
She was preceded in death by her foster parents and siblings, Dr. William Gillis, Bernard Gillis and Albert Gagnon. She is survived by her husband of 47 years, James Otis Nicodemus of Chelmsford, MA, their children, David Nicodemus of Lowell, Kalyn Nicodemus Olson of Tewksbury, and Kyle Nicodemus of Chelmsford and her cherished grandchildren Ada Nicodemus and Ian Gray; and her Canadian siblings Judy Richards Grace,Dr. William Durant and Joe and his wife Pat Stewart. She is also survived by her son-in-law James Olson and daughters-in-law Margaret Greenslade and Moira Gray and many, many dear friends including Patricia Shaw and Sharon Nugent.
Visiting hours Sun. Noon to 4P.M. Funeral Mon. at 8:30A.M. from the DOLAN FUNERAL HOME 106 MIDDLESEX ST. CHELMSFORD, with a funeral Mass at 9:30A.M. at the Immaculate Conception Church, Lowell, MA. Burial in the Pine Ridge Cemetery, Chelmsford. Memorials may be made in her name to the Lowell General Hospital Cancer Center TeamWalk, 295 Varnum Ave., Lowell, MA 01854. Marilyn (or Malsie) as a few of us lovingly called her was a sweet friend and wonderful co-worker for many years.
She was always compassionate and gracious. Now she is an angel to look over me from Heaven wearing that sweet smile.
