Mary Louise McCarthy, 80, of Chelmsford, MA died unexpectedly Monday, June 5, at Lowell General Hospital. Beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she enjoyed poetry, taking care of people, donating to charities, taking care of her pets and the many birds that came to visit her every day, and the Red Sox, but the thing she loved most was spending time with her family and praying the Rosary for all her loved ones.

She was married to the late John J. McCarthy who died on June 20, 1982.

Born in Cambridge, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Catherine Doherty. She graduated from St. Mary High School with the class of 1954 and went on to earn her R.N. license from Cambridge City Hospital School of Nursing and her Bachelor’s degree in Nursing at Regis College in Weston.

She retired from the Edith Nourse V.A. Hospital in Bedford, and also worked at Middlesex Community College and various other healthcare facilities in the area.

She is survived by three sons, Mark S. McCarthy and his wife Lee Ann of Hampton, NH, John J. McCarthy Jr. of Hudson, NH, and Edward J. McCarthy and his wife Sandra of Pepperell; four daughters, Bernadette Zabierek of Gardner, Kathleen “Penny” Howell and her husband Chuck of Chelmsford, Regina M. Ryder and her husband Christopher of Chelmsford, and Becky Tyros and husband George of Chelmsford; her sister Margaret Meara; her sister-in-law, Patricia Doherty of Boston; twenty grandchildren, Mark and Amanda McCarthy, Catherine, Bernadette, and Walter Zabierek, Jolene Jendrock, Jessica and Julie McCarthy, Sonya McDonald, Shelly and Scott Phoenix, Sarah Howell, Tiffany DeCoste, Marylou, Victoria, Clayton, and Gina Marie Ryder, Cassidy, Derek “DJ”, and Annemarie Tyros; and two nieces and nephews, Cheryl Koczur and Christopher Meara.

She was the mother of the late Warren McCarthy of Lowell who died September 2, 1989, grandmother of the late Matthew Zabierek who died December 29, 2005, sister of the late Edward Doherty who died March 5, 2014, and sister in-law of the late Kenneth Meara who died on August 10, 2015.

I was very sorry to hear about Mary McCarthy passing away. I knew Mary at Middlesex Community College in Bedford
in the 1980’s. I was fairly friendly with her, and we would frequently go to the VA cafeteria to get lunch. I can
have fond memories of our discussions, and some joking around. My heart felt sympathies to her family.
