Philip John Mailhot Jr., of Westford, MA, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, March 26, 2024. He was the beloved husband of Jean Patricia Mailhot, with whom he shared a lifetime of love and companionship and celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this past August 16th.
Born in Lawrence, MA, Philip was the cherished son of Philip John Mailhot Sr. and Claire Rachel Mailhot (Poulin). He was a proud graduate of Lawrence Central Catholic High School and enlisted in the U.S. Navy following his graduation. Upon his honorable discharge from the Navy, Philip went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Merrimack College, laying the foundation for a very successful career as an electrical engineer.
After graduating college, Philip was working for MIT. It was at this time he began working with NASA on the Apollo 11 project. Philip played a pivotal role by designing a timing mechanism for the rocket ship, and that timing mechanism remains on the moon to this day.
For the remainder of his career, he was employed by Raytheon. Philip made substantial contributions to the development of ground to air defense guidance systems especially the Hawk missile system. With his work he travelled all over the world, training military service members on the Hawk Missile System.
In his retirement, Philip was a dedicated grandfather and served as a head coach for Chelmsford Little League for his oldest grandsons, positively impacting the lives of many young athletes.
Known for his sophisticated simplicity, Philip was admired for his values and timeless sense of class. Philip was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather, and until his passing was more concerned about the well-being of his wife and family than himself.
Philip will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by his daughters Marie Leahy and fiancé Patrick Rogers of North Billerica, MA, Claire Mailhot of Jefferson, ME, and Caroline Mailhot and her partner, Lisa Locher of Swampscott, MA, his 5 grandsons, Timothy Leahy Jr, Bryan Leahy, Ted Worthley, Clay Worthley, and George Mailhot as well as five great-grandchildren, his niece Tracy Watson, her husband Matthew and their son, Cameron of North Andover, MA, and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Philip was predeceased by his beloved sister Marlene Connolly.
