Phyllis was born on January 21, 1933 to Gordon and Alice Boutilier. Phyllis was the youngest of seven children. Phyllis graduated from Somerville High School and worked in the Schrafft’s Candy building in Charlestown when she met Navy Shore Patrol Man Gene Mathews. Phyllis and Gene were married on June 22, 1953.
Phyllis and Gene had their first home in Wilmington when they welcomed the first child Phyllis in 1954. They welcomed their second child Debra in 1956 and in 1958, they had their third child Gene. They moved to Somerville in 1962 and welcomed their fourth child Sherri. In 1963 they moved to North Chelmsford, MA and in 1964 she gave birth to Alan.
Her daughter Phyllis gave her two wonderful grandchildren William and Christopher and they each gave Phyllis 2 great grandchildren. Debra also gave Phyllis two grandchildren Samantha and Maxine and they in turn gave Phyllis two great grandchildren each. Gene did not have children of his own but, did marry Therese and became stepfather to her two children Alan and Jessica who then gave Phyllis two more great grandchildren. Sheri and her husband Jon gave Phyllis eight more grandchildren, Alice Mark, Malorie, Lila, Daniel, Kalene, Odette, and Zoe. Her youngest son, Alan and his wife Tammy gave Phyllis two more grandchildren, Alan Jr and Haylee. Phyllis reveled in spending time with the great grandchildren who all called her Gigi.
Phyllis worked alongside her husband Gene at Ames Textile in Lowell, MA for many years. After Ames Textile closed down, Phyllis took a position at Continental Insurance. After retiring from Continental, Phyllis became a Teacher’s Aide at the Montessori School in North Chelmsford. This was the perfect position for Phyllis because she was able to give her love and guidance to a new generation of children that would prove to be her most rewarding endeavor. Upon retiring from the Montessori School, Phyllis was given a huge send off with many accolades and numerous mementos from the students, their parents and the staff.
Phyllis loved camping with Gene, going to the beach and watching her beloved Red Sox.
Phyllis’ husband passed away in 1997 leaving a giant hole in her heart that never truly healed.
Phyllis was quite active up until 2023. She volunteered at the Senior Center and would set up coffee and cookies for the weekly meeting of the Merry Widows Club, of which she was a member.
At Phyllis’ request there will be a celebration of life held at a later date.
