William F. Barrett, Jr. of Chelmsford, MA

William “Bill” Foye Barrett, Jr. 81, of Chelmsford, Massachusetts, passed away on Wednesday, August 2, 2023 at Lowell General Hospital after a brief struggle with cancer.

William was a devoted husband to his loving wife, Joan Barrett of Lowell, Massachusetts, for 53 years, and he was the son of Marguerite A. Grady and William F. Barrett. He was also the brother of the late Michael J. Barrett.

William was born on October 2, 1941 in Lowell, Massachusetts. He graduated from Keith Academy in Lowell in 1959. After high school, he attended Portia Law School before serving in the U.S. Army from 1967 to 1969. During his military career, William was stationed in Vietnam and received the National Defense Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, and Vietnam Service Medal. For many years after the war, he worked at the post office in Wayland, Massachusetts.

William, his wife, Joan, and their daughter, Mary, often visited Seabrook Beach in in New Hampshire together. They enjoyed spending time at the beach and also took trips to Cape Cod, Massachusetts. William loved the New England Patriots, watching game shows, and going on family road trips to Kimball Farm for ice cream. He also enjoyed reminiscing about his time in the military and sharing war stories with his friend, James H Murray, on the phone for hours.

Bill is survived by his only daughter, Mary Lee Barrett of Chelmsford, Massachusetts, his sister Sheila Barrett Mcniff Lasley and her husband John Lasley of North Carolina, his sister-in-law Gayle Sobanek and her fiance Lucien ‘Butch” Gilbert of Chelmsford, Massachusetts, and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
